The first year of the 3-year plan
for the King’s Kids Program was the trip
to Tallahassee, Florida. Middle and High School
members of the St. Petersburg Boys & Girls
Club qualified for a trip to Florida’s State
Capitol. Program curriculum was developed by two
teachers from the Pinellas County School System.
After 4 months of classes, guest speakers, personal
research and local trips to the Court House and
local government offices, 12 students were chosen
through criteria including: attendance, attitude,
behavior, grade point average, overall participation
and essay presentation. The 12 students went on
an all expense paid trip to Tallahassee, Florida
to meet Governor Jeb Bush, tour both FAMU and
FSU campuses, tour the state Capitol building
and participate in a mock House session. All students
enrolled in King’s Kids were active participants
in the planning and execution of the trip, including
overall trip itinerary, letters to state and local
officials, scheduling hotels, airfare, transportation
and recreation.
Governor Jeb Bush recognized Shaun’s commitment
to children and the positive influence he is having
on them by getting them excited about their government
and politics, and appointed Shaun to the Board
of Directors of Volunteer Florida, the Governor’s
non-profit charitable agency he founded in 2000.
This is a very prestigious appointment for Shaun,
and will provide him and his Foundation greater
exposure in the political community
